I (like many of you) currently have a love of chalkboards. I even have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to them!!! They are so versatile and add such a cute charm to most spaces. I knew I wanted to add one to the kitchen cabinets as soon as they were finished, and so I got it done as soon as I could.
I made a template from paper and used it to trace onto a piece of thin masonite from the hardware store. Then hubby used a little saw and cut it out for me. A little sanding on the edges and it fit almost perfectly into the recessed panel of the cabinet. Then a applied 3 coats of Rustoleum's black chalkboard paint with a foam roller. Right now it stays in just fine with a little friction, but if I ever need to, I'll add a little bit of velcro to keep it in. I didn't want to paint the chalk paint directly onto the cabinet because doing the fancy chalkboard art lettering is much easier on a horizontal surface. Plus, this way I haven't done anything permanent to the cabinetry.
I know I have a long way to go in practicing my lettering, but I still love the way it turned out and it is already proving to be a much used feature in the kitchen.

This is an idea I have had in my head for a while now, and now that I see yours, I must do it. What a beautiful job you did and your lettering is perfect. Thanks again for the inspiration and a much needed "push".

I've been practicing my lettering for years and mine still doesn't look as pretty as this does. I love your little chalk board and it fits in beautifully in your newly done kitchen. Diane

Love how it turned out. Great job. Love your blog also.
I think your lettering looks perfect, Karen! I love this! It suits this door wonderfully and it looks like it was painted right on the door. Such a great idea.
That is just too cute and goes so well in your newly remodeled kitchen.
That is a great idea, and practical too...Love your kitchen!

Great idea, hard to lose this grocery list! Haven't been to visit for awhile - love your new header and blog design!
Hi Karen, That looks great and it was such a clever idea to make the chalk board removable.
Hugs,
Julia
It looks AWESOME! The lettering is very pretty. I try different styles of lettering, it is so -so, and maybe someday the calligraphy will not look like I am in kindergarden :-) Your style is amazing ♥
I love this--it looks so good! A chalkboard makes a house look so homey and personal. I just wish I was as talented as you are at your lettering. I am not good at it at all! Your lettering looks great :)

Karen-- only you could do this and I absolutely love the chalkboard in your kitchen-- which by the way/- continues to amaze me because it is so gorgeous!!
You are so so blessed--
Vicki
Love your lettering and the great idea! Beautiful!!!
I am in love with your chalkboard. What beautiful lettering you did. I debated on doing chalkboard doors on an armoire, but didn't follow through. Our kitchen clock is also a chalkboard, but it isn't beautiful writing- just a practical message board.
perfect, thanks for sharing the details on how to get the look

Your chalk board is delightful . . . love that triple sink, too.
Great kitchen :)
Have a joyful day,
Your blogging sister, Connie :)
It looks wonderful and adds just the right touch to your kitchen. And I would never have guessed that it is on a separate board!!!
It is perfect!
Love how it fits so good with your kitchen!
Im a lover of chalkboard too!
Deborah ;)
Karen- I meant to tell you that my Mother had the most wonderful chalkboard in her kitchen. Somehow and without thinking-/ my sisters and I let that board go in the estate sale. It's always been one of my biggest regrets--

Fantastic idea...and how clever to use a template instead of directly onto the cupboard door.
Practice, schmatrice! That lettering looks amazing! And what a clever idea to utilize the cabinet door. Never would have thought of that one. Mine is from an auction out in the country and hangs by the backdoor. I can always use a reminder, before I head out, of what I need to pick up at the store!
Lovely job there Karen and I love the position of the chalkboard on the diagonal like that, it's a real feature of your new kitchen. Lucky duck with your new kitchen...when we move hopefully I can get one too.
Your chalkboard looks so chic! And, if you hand-lettered that, you've got talent. I'd love to have a chalkboard feature in my kitchen or laundry room, but my handwritten (printing, too) is so bad, even I can't read it! I'm a new follower.
Dang! That looks adorable... May I suggest FunTak to keep your board in place? I think it may go by a different name now, but it's made by Dap and I think you can get it Lowe's or Home Depot. It'll keep that baby stuck right there without damaging the wood.... and will roll right off when you want to remove it. I actually use it to hold numbers and a metal plaque on my interior doors... Works like a charm.
Blessings,
Spencer
Hi Karen
I had seen your new lovely updoo on your kitchen but just popped by and love the addition of the blackboard. It looks fantastic. I love blackboards.
My best, Sheryl :-)
I like you, have also been doing a bit of a kitchen re-do...not as BIG a yours, but wow is it a lot of work! Your kitchen is so beautiful and full of so much inspiration to me...now I just have to do this on one of my cabinets! It is adorable and your printing/chalking is beautiful!

So pretty. If I had a kitchen like that I would definitely need to learn to cook a little better. Wish my kitchen is like that too. :)
