Livingroom re-do finally finished! (almost)

Yeah!!! I finally got a room finished! (Well almost) I didn't re-arrange any furniture because the way that it is seems to work best for us. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It's not that I didn't like it before, but I have been wanting to do this for quite a while. All the public rooms can be see from each other and the way it was before, just didn't work for me anymore. (To many different color schemes)

I still need to have a slipcover made for the sofa above, but that will have to wait until I can save up some more money. I made all the pillows myself. (I'll show details further down) and took down the green and white drapes and made burlap drapes to take their place. I still had some of the brown that I used to trim out the sheers so I used that again for the burlap to keep a really finished look.

So here is the left side of the room before. You can see the big black hole of a TV in the corner.

And the other side... The coffee table was a bench that I cut the bottom of the legs off to make it a better coffee table height. The wood side table came from my husbands family. The ends fold down. It's a cool table but I have been wanting to paint it for a LONG time. I still haven't convinced him to let me do that.

After the face lift on the cabinet. I'm so thrilled with the change. No more black hole!!!

The coffee table got a new paint job as well. I added small touches of black all through the room since there is actually a lot of built in black in the house. I painted the small shelves on the wall black, added black trim details on the pillows, added black trim to the lampshade, and my DH found that great old metal R at a construction sight he was working on.

I used some of the vintage lace and vintage jewelry that I found on vacation for the pillow above. The bows on the corners are made from tea stained gauze.

The fabric for this pillow come from the old curtains in my studio. I made three of these in total.

This pillow I used an old beige crocheted doily I had. It actually matches the color of the beige denim fabric really well.

The detail on this pillow is a vintage hat!! I found it at a great shop here in town.

Here is the "before" of the cabinet. My mom gave us the TV and the cabinet about 4 years ago. It used to be an all in one cabinet and TV. Then the TV died and they pulled the old one out and just shoved the new one in it's place. There was a lot of ugly space around the new TV.

I decoupaged the outside with vintage sheet music. Then we taped it all off and sprayed the front with Krylon Fusion paint for plastic. Then I removed the front panel that housed the old speaker and re upholstered it with a quilted silk that I had in my fabric bin. Lastly I decoupaged some 3" wide balsa wood with more sheet music and framed out the opening. Presto! All the yucky stuff gone!

Well that's the new Livingroom! I still want to add 2 more frames to the window. I'll find them at a future garage sale. (Prime garage sale season is rapidly approaching!) The other rooms are almost finished. Just a few more things to do. Thanks for hanging out with me. I'll see you again soon!

Hello Karen. My niece directed me to your blog. She said "Who knows. You might be neighbors." I actually live in Phoenix, but my mailing address is Scottsdale.
I really love the makeover of your living room. I love cottage style also although I don't have much of it. I definitely do not care for the southwest style decorating which is so popular in our area. I hope you will drop in and see me. I have 3 blogs. 3 and a half actually. One of them is called At Home in Scottdale.

This is really great! I love the TV - I have always hated the empty sides on my entertainment center - you have planted some seed here - I will have to think on it.

Thanks for sharing!

One thing I really hate in a room is a big, ugly, television. Unfortunately, I have one, it is monster-sized and there isn't a whole lot that can be done with it. Some day I will find a huge old cabinet to disguise it (I am always looking). Your solution to the "TV problem" is terrific and your TV cabinet looks sooo much nicer after you finished your makeover. It was a super fabulous idea to paint it white, recover the speaker area with old fabric, and apply the sheet music! Now ... it's a thing of beauty.

Karen - room looks marvelous! give yourself a huge pat on the back Girl! Now you can sit down, take a breath, look around and think "ahhhhhh", and then proceed to get ready for the Holidays!
I have empty frames in my family room and my dining room and just put another one on the bakers rack. I absolutely love them!!! My father-in-law looked at them the last time they were here and looked at me and said "Babe, you're missing something! They're empty!" I just laughed. MEN!!!!
I am redoing a master bedroom for a friend of mine and am doing them all painted white and shabby-chiced. They'll look awesome. (I guess - if there was one good thing to come out of a divorce, she gets to decoate her bedroom the way she wants it now. Frilly and foofed out! HA!)

Love your re-make on your living room! The TV looks awesome! I WANT new slipcovers for my sofa too. I had 2 Queen Ann arem chairs that were a terrible fabric & had a lady do custom slip covers years ago. I STILL AM IN LOVE WITH THOSE CHAIRS! And it is the slipcovers that make them. She did a buttoned look on the backs. I should do a post on them. In fact... would be a perfect Metamorphis Monday Post.

And I love those tin shelves above your sofa! Where did you find those treasures? Did you do those too? Great Job! Can't wait to see the other rooms you are working on.

Lovely! Gorgeous! Beautiful! I love how you kept what you had but updated it all to bring the whole look together. The overhaul on the tv cabinet is absolutely fantastic. I love the whole look. I also like the fact that you cover your walls with things that you love. I do that also and over here in Kuwait, that just totally freaks people out. They think my place is a museum. HA! Great makeover and looking forward to the rest. Best wishes, Tammy

I love your new look in your living room. The TV turned out great. We bought a new house and the builders are making fireplaces just specifically to hold the new flat screen TVs. I said no at first but now I think Ill put mine up on my fireplace mantel. If I ever get a flat screen tv..they are still spendy.Someday I will show pixs of the house. Anyway was really interested in your burlap drapes. Are they painters drape cloth? I bought some a couple years ago and never got the nerve to put them up. Your drapes what I can make out look good. I have enjoyed looking at your room..love those pillows..Sally

Hi Karen ~ Your re-do of the living room is really lovely. I especially like your wall treatments. Thanks for stopping by Star's Fault to visit, I am in lovely Alabama today and noticed your quesiton about if your burlap curtains would shrink. I confess, I've never measured burlap before/after washing, but I bet it does scrunch up some - especially in the dryer, but if they did, you could always add a panel to the bottom of your curtains, which would be really chic also!!

Blessings ~ Eileen @ Star's Fault

Love it, Karen! I had to come back three times, my computer wouldn't load all your photos. It was worth it, love the new slipcover and I can't believe what you did to the TV - it's gorgeous. You've given me inspiration for the upcoming week. I've been stuck in a rut because we're having our roof replaced and they've been working weekends only. Thanks for giving me my putter-itness back again.
